Baler (movie)

September 22, 2010
In 1898, a band of Spanish soldiers heroically defended Baler (which would later be the capital municipality of Aurora in 1951) against Filipino forces for 337 long and grueling days.

Filipino barrio lass Feliza (Anne Curtis) and Filipino-Spanish soldier Celso (Jericho Rosales) are caught in a forbidden love, torn apart by the societies they came from. Feliza's father Nanding (Philip Salvador) is an anti-Spanish government fighter, which puts pressure on the young couple to keep their relationship a secret. Outnumbered and out-gunned by the Indios they once governed and abused, the Spanish soldiers in Baler, including Celso and buddy Lope (Mark Bautista), are now forced to hole up in a church as they wait for non-existent military reinforcements to rescue them from the band of Filipinos who have now surrounded them and are waiting for their surrender.

Kung Ako Na Lang Sana (movie)

September 19, 2010
The other friend in question is Vince (Aga Mulach), who can only be described as a charming cad. He has a penchant for the ladies, and is shrewd enough to admit his weakness for the opposite sex without reveling in it. One night out on the town, he chances upon Emmy after her boyfriend breaks up with her. The events that unravel afterward could have been immensely predictable by Filipino standards. But what happens next is almost miraculous based on my expectation. The film decides to simply delve into both their lives and witness the happenings that will draw these two together.

Aga Mulach also shines just as bright (if not brighter) than Mrs. Cuneta. His charismatic glee permeates the film and his presence generates so much good will (and well-timed goofiness), which is key for Sharon's character to play off of. It's no wonder that he's the Tom Cruise of Philippine Cinema (doing a Hugh Grant here though). It's impossible not to like him.

Within its wonderful supporting cast came one performance that caught my eye. Mickey Ferriols plays Vince's girlfriend in the movie's second half, and she is wonderful. She projects a great sense of authority and class, and at one point, she confronts Vince toe-to-toe with remarkable dignity and intelligence. It's a moment that I rarely see portrayed by young Filipina actresses these days. Let's hope there's more of her in the future.

Forever

September 12, 2010
The story is absolutely brilliant. Aga plays the average-income fellow who lives with his pop, attends college, and into automobiles/motorbikes. On the other hand, Mikee lives the rich pilipina life with a trusted father and an ambitious, hard-nosed pilipina mom who wants good for her daughter. An arranged marriage seems to have gotten in the way of things in the family causing disarray. As a result, Mikee's character leaves the rich province life and trading it with the more hard-driven lifestyle in Manila. From there, she encounters people that will assist her through her ability to survive thus becoming a waitress in the process thanks in largely to their help. It's a hard way to make ends meet but she never let up her anguish. And that's when she meets Aga right there in the restaurant. Their eyes meet and wow -- you see forever! Things'll get quite complex as the story goes further and further. I won't mention the end here but all I can tell you is that almost any pilipino romantic comedies got the good endings. And this movie had a pretty decent one. You can get a kleenex but it's nothing heartbreaking, believe me. You're gonna cheer for Aga and Mikee's characters as they try to sway away from her (Mikee's) mom and her soon-to-be in-laws, including the arrogant husband-to-be whom she knows since childhood. It's gonna show that real love comes true and that it doesn't have to be arranged.

My Only U

September 10, 2010
Winona (Toni Gonzaga) is burdened by a family curse --every woman in her family dies before the age of 25. She accepts this and focuses instead on taking care of her blind father (Dennis Padilla), refusing to go into any kind of relationship as she is sure that she wouldn't live till she reached her 25th year of age. On the other hand, Bong (Vhong Navarro), the compound's manager and Winona's best friend, has been in love with Winona ever since. Because of that love, he tries to do everything to save Winona from her curse.

The film starts two days before Winona's 25th birthday. From the beginning and the flashbacks, it is noticed that Winona appears to have fully accepted her fate, even going as far as threating to kill herself when the people she lived with in the compound, with the leadership of Bong, lock her up in her apartment to prevent harm from falling upon her. In the day before her birthday, Bong attempts to make the most out of it, showing just how dedicated and in love he is to her, completely diregarding the inevitable pain from the loss of a loved one. A few hours before her 25th year, Bong arranges a party in the compound, a countdown to her death. And, as the clock hits the 12th hour, Winona survives. Once the joy and shock of living beyond her 25 year deadline leaves, she begins to change --she now wants to begin living her life. But, the missing diagnosis of Winona's health arrives. Bong opens it and finds Winona has lupus and that she is about to die, again.

My Only U plays around the question, 'What would you do if the life of the person you love is on a time limit?' It centers around death --albeit, in a light and comedic way, but at the same time touching on the hurts and realities that center around that one constant in human life.

Sayo Lamang Movie Review

September 4, 2010

If you're asked what Star Cinema's latest film Sa 'Yo Lamang is all about, you just have to mention Tanging Yaman and you will be understood completely.
The film begins with the return of the estranged father Franco (Christopher de Leon) who after a very long time decided to show up, of all occasions, at the housewarming of the family he left behind. The mother Amanda (Lorna Tolentino) is willing to take him back but eldest daughter Dianne (Bea Alonzo) seethes at the thought of forgiving her father, and worse, living in the house she practically built. At first, it was not clear why Dianne became this angry (to the point of telling the ultimate Filipino cussword to her father's face) but as the story goes on, we discover how Dianne worked almost all her life, sacrificing everything for the sake of her mother and siblings.
It's not the same for all the kids, however. Coby (Coco Martin), and to some extent James (Enchong Dee) and Lisa (Miles Ocampo), lobby for their father to be given another chance. In the end, Dianne agrees to this arrangement and from there starts the uneasiness and the tension within the household. He discovers what has become of his family, especially Dianne, who has become a cold-hearted control freak who wants to be in charge of the lives of her siblings. He witnesses his other children go through other crises like unwanted pregnancy and a vehicular accident that he himself has almost caused, sending Dianne in to a more heated rage.
The biggest predicament is the one involving Amanda, with her revealing secrets about her current situation and her past. Over time, the great wall between Franco and Dianne comes down and they realize that it is not too late for their family to become whole again.
Direk Laurice and screenwriter Ricky Lee have done a great job, giving each character a chance to establish their significance in the story.
